Golf rangefinders

My boyfriend’s dad wouldn’t dream of playing a round of golf without newfangled technology, including a golf rangefinder. This gadget ranges from where you’re standing directly to the pin, not to the objects behind it. It has about a one-yard accuracy for reliable ranges every time and a built-in reflector to give distance in both yards and meters. It’s completely waterproof for safety and is lightweight to carry in the included traveling case.

Practice makes perfect on the course, but a bit of mechanical help can’t hurt, either.

golf gift borderGPS golf gift

My dad's favorite pastime has always been golf so that's what all our birthday and holiday gifts have been centered on for years. So, by the time he retired, he had all the golf accessories I could think of, and I was out of gift ideas for his retirement.

While searching online for help, I ran across this SkyCaddie SG4 (SG122)skycaddie golf gift. I'd never seen anything like it and I knew that my dad probably hadn't either.

When I gave it to him, he couldn't wait to see what it could do. He spent days with the SkyCaddie in his hand while he learned all the bells and whistles. Now, he never goes golfing without it and loves to talk about how his golfing buddies want one too. I've even had to share the website with several of them so they can get one for themselves. I am so glad I found a gift that my dad loves so much and uses so often.

Laser Baseball

My brother is the hardest person to buy a gift for. Every birthday and holiday, I struggle to find something different that he hasn't already bought for himself. When I came across this Laser Baseball (PS115) online, I was so excited! My brother is a fanatic about baseball and has been playing ever since he learned to walk.

I knew that this baseball was unique enough that he wouldn't have found one on his own too. When I gave it to him for his birthday, I found out I was right. He had never seen a ball like this before. He loves it and uses it all the time to practice for games or just for fun. His baseball coach even asked him to bring the ball to practice.

My brother, his teammates, and all his friends are always competing to see who can throw it the fastest or outdo the speed of their last throw. I could not have found a more perfect gift for my brother.

The Flying Alarm Clock.

Wake up, Sleepyhead.

I have a terrible time waking up in the morning. For years, I've kept the alarm clock directly next to my pillow, and still, I manage, every day, to hit the snooze button what must be three or four times in a dazed stupor before I even realize morning has brightly (and loudly) dawned.

But at last, clockmakers have taken pity me and the countless others immune to AM radio and incessant beeping. The treatment: Hammacher Schlemmer's flying alarm clock, a mere $39.95 at www.hammacher.com.

This groggy morning-person's dream rings when set; and also launches a rotor into the heights of a bedroom. The alarm (which, if snoozed, rings every seven minutes for an hour) ceases when the rotor is returned to the base, meaning sluggish sleepers such as myself have no choice but to get up at the appropriate time.

Finally, I'll be able to put my makeup on before I leave the house.

AlcoHawk Digital Alcohol Detector from Think Geek

My brother is notoriously difficult to buy for, and now that he's in college things are no different. I spent the first year of his college education buying him things like iPods, flash drives, and techie stuff, which he loves - but now he seems to have everything he needs, so shopping for him is hard.

Luckily my roommate was talking the other day about these digital alcohol detectors. Apparently she knew a guy - the same sort of tech-lover as my brother - who had gotten one for Christmas and, aside from its practical appeal, he just loved using it. I figured this was a good thing to look into for my brother. He's a partier, but he's also a very responsible guy. And it was a techie gadget as well as being a safety device. What more could I ask for?

I found the Alcohawk Digital Alcohol Detector at ThinkGeek.com Unique Alcohol Detector Gift, and it looked like exactly what I wanted. It fits on your keychain and essentially gives you the same "breathalyzer" test that the police would. This is ideal for someone like my brother, who isn't one of those people who gets wasted drunk, but does need to know sometimes whether he's hit the legal limit. I thought this was a cool way of showing him I cared about him while still providing him with a neat gadget that allowed him to go out and have fun (safely).

He did love it, of course. He also gets to show off to all his friends and apparently he bores them all to tears explaining how the oxide sensor works. Whatever; he's happy, and I'm glad I came up with a unique and interesting gift for him! Of course, that means I've really set the bar high for next year.
